I'm considering purchasing either an MTH Z-4000 or a Lionel ZW transformer. Can anyone give me their thoughts and or experiences with both? I'll be using this on a non-command/control layout, but that factor may change in the future. Below are some questions that I have:

I was talking to someone about how difficult it is to buy from a web site nowadays. So many people have missed the point. As a web designer I was told you should be able to buy something from a site in three clicks. At last I found a site that allowed me to do this. It's called

OK, I've got the beaver-tail and a couple of coaches. I know I have to paint the sides on the outside, first the interior colour then the exterior blues. Should I paint a, say, grey barrier coat before the exterior colours?

I wonder if anyone has any tips on how to create rusty looking rails... I've seen it on many OO/HO layouts and presumed people must paint the sides of the rails but I'm planning on using N gauge with about 60 yds of track - painting would probably be a life-time's work!

I am trying to remove the shell from a LL GP 38-2 to add a DCC decoder. I have taken the couplers off and removed the two screws that are inboard of the coupler pockets. However the shell is as solid as ever. Any help would be greatly appreciated
