Minimum radius for long trains?13 Oct 2005 09:17 GMT22
I'm trying to fit the maximum length of double track main line into a
tailchaser layout set diagonally across a 12ft square loft space. The
largest storage sidings at the back will accomodate the sort of train I'd
like to run, i.e. a locomotive and 9 or 10 BR Mk 1s. What is a ...

Several years since the 25watt beast was used owing to house move , but now
building a small O gauge layout, and I find that the bit isn't as hot as it

Life on the U.P., North Plate NE, coal trains13 Oct 2005 03:51 GMT1
The first part of a two-part article about coal unit trains and the U.P. and
the unions and men who operate them appears in this week's (Oct.3) New
Yorker magazine.  Fascinating stuff - lots of inside railroading information
and lore.  I never knew U.P. stood for 'unlimited ...
Quartering with Knurled Axles13 Oct 2005 00:53 GMT3
Is there a magic solution for quartering wheels on knurled axles? By
trial and error I have managed to get mine so that it runs smoothly
backwards with just a hint of stickiness when running forwards. I
suspect this is as close as I am going to get without building a
Miniature power tools12 Oct 2005 20:38 GMT21
I have a Proxxon miniature power tool, a bit like a Dremel but
allegedly better made.  It's pretty good, handy for drilling small
holes in baseboards and running a small diamond saw which I use for
accurate cutting of rail ends.

I have a structure I finished with water based paint (my first), I want to
get the shine off and I was thinking of using Dull Cote.
Would the spray Dullcote damage the finish on the structure? If so, any
other options?  Thanks to all for your feedback.

Just a short note that I am currently selling a DVD video of
a rare movement of a Schnabel rail wagon during daylight hours.
It is the largest rail wagon in the Southern Hemisphere, and
was moved empty from it's storage location to a rail museum on

I have a few questions regarding DCC operation.
1. Engine #1 is being controlled by person #1 using a DCC hand set.
Q: How easy is it for person #2 to assume control of engine #1 using a
different hand set?
Insights into painting figures please12 Oct 2005 03:57 GMT35
Hi again all
Ok, so I bought one of the Preiser 100 people sets..... unpainted of course.
I have sprayed a base of beige as a skin toning to start out with, but can't
help but think I might've been better off doing them all in a brown and
