Hornby R309 or R350 Class A4 4-6-2 Mallard  ?11 Oct 2007 22:37 GMT10
Just found one of my old loco's from the early 80's
It's a Class A4 4-6-2 Mallard with a late BR crest ( the red lion
sitting in a crown ).
As it has the 1980 / 81 Hornby Crest ( the one with the belt and

I heard about this cheap range back in July in a Taunton toy shop, I was
told these are produced by the old Lima plants aquired by Hornby.
The quality looks good - I am not that bothered about super fine detailing -
and its hard to believe the prices - whats the catch?
Small steam...11 Oct 2007 17:41 GMT14
I'm thinking that I'd like to have a modern looking, small steam engine for
my HO scale layout.  I'm not a stickler for prototype, so I'm looking for a
good trade-off between performance & value.  I was thinking that I'd like to
have an Atlantic, but the only one I know of there ...

Apropos yr ongoing battle with various American retrograde rednecks:
It may seem fun and all to banter with these bastards, but you might
ought to remember who you're wrassling with. With that in mind, I leave
you this little ditty, heard way back when from the Boys of the Lough:

Actually, this is a rather basic question, and a
scarcely hoopy frood could probably answer it.

A Record ?.09 Oct 2007 13:29 GMT1
I've lost the original thread stating that a Airfix Class 31 hauled
105 coaches.
According to my 1988 Dapol catalog, it was a Dapol ex Airfix Class 31
that holds this record. Also, a Prairie Tank loco pulled 60 "B"

Serviceable vs. can motors08 Oct 2007 21:30 GMT13
There is currently a very heated debate on the Hornby.com forum about
the type of motors used in Hornby loco's.  The battle lines are drawn
between those who would like a return to serviceable motors like the
old X.03 & X.04 but in a modern version and those who feel the can

LBSC Railway shed at Tunbridge Wells West station08 Oct 2007 15:14 GMT7
What I need in order to model this massive [to my eyes] 4 track shed at the
MPD for Tunbridge Wells West station, Built I suspect by LBSC railway in

at www.semolin.org.

Has anyone purchased one of these?   Any comments other than "it's not
british"?!
I've seen and heard one and it appeared extremely impressive but personal

Code 55 N Gauge Track08 Oct 2007 14:28 GMT5
I have a small problem with using the finescale Code 55 N Gauge track
in so much as that when laying the track the rails naturally lengthen
and shorten around bends etc.  I have though tried to pull one rail
through the sleeper bed to connect into a rail joiner however I cannot
Replacement driver07 Oct 2007 16:47 GMT1
Local friend, a tinplate enthusiast, received about 6 or so brass locos
from a friend who had them stored, unpainted since original purchases. I
was asked to get them in running shape.
One that I had to tune up was a United Models, Union Pacific 0-6-0,  that
