Just needs a steady hand, keen eye, infinite patience, hours without interruptions..... Is this the worst task available ? how long to master using paint where you stand with loco against the wall

How much clearance do folks usually leave between the running rail and platform edge in OO? I could measure it from my models but it would be a bit sad if I later bought one that was wider over the valvegear and didn't fit :-)
